The goal was to establish a non-profit organization consisting of all full-time members of the Police Department. Past members wanted to bridge the gap between the citizens of La Habra and the Police Department by becoming more involved in community services, events, and charities. That tradition has not changed. Just as the city has grown over the years in size and population, so has the Police Association.
Sonora High School History

Sonora High School was originally built on forty-two acres on the eastern side of La Habra and opened to ninth and tenth graders in 1966, becoming a full, four-year senior high school in 1968. The school garnered a number of architectural design awards at its inception, with its nearly entirely indoor, but very open, classroom arrangement. This design, at the time, was considered the epitome of a learning environment that would meet the needs of students, staff and the community while maximizing opportunities for student learning. Ten wings, a gymnasium/locker room/pool complex, a food services area, a lecture hall / amphitheater arrangement, and the school offices all surround three large indoor “commons” areas, in the middle of which is the library/media center. As times and educational philosophies changed, the school began adding doors to the various classrooms in the wings. Today, nearly all classrooms have doors, with the exception of the 420 Science Wing. Most staff feel that this has enhanced the ability of their students to concentrate on their learning, paving the way for higher achievement.

Nevertheless, the indoor environment overall has been most favorable from the point of view of safety and togetherness. With limited points of entry to the campus, it is much easier to keep track of both students and visitors. Also, the somewhat forced togetherness has led to the distinctive sense of community among the students, staff and parents at the school. This pervasive culture has no doubt been a major factor in the recognition by the state as a California Distinguished School four times, in 1994, 1996, 2000 and 2007.

The Sonora High School Community

Sonora High School is one of seven high schools in the Fullerton Union High School District, located in North Orange County and serving students from the cities of La Habra, Fullerton, and Brea. The area served by Sonora could be described as a suburban community with growing commercial activity, but with limited industry. Members of the community are mostly middle socio-economic professional, managerial, and skilled workers. Sonora is a comprehensive four-year high school with an enrollment of approximately 2000 students. Sonora High School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. From the class of 2006, 30% of the graduating class will be attending four-year colleges and 50% will be attending community colleges. Several unique programs have been implemented at Sonora — the International Baccalaureate Honors Program, the Scope, Sequence and Coordination Science Program, Medical Careers Academy, JROTC and AVID.

Behind the scenes, the event chair works in conjunction with the City of La Habra for park use permits, manages logistics / operations and engages volunteers to chair booths, entertainment and contests. “The La Habra Lions Club is proud to put on this event for the community. Not only is it a fun family event. It is also a major fund raiser that benefits the entire community.

Who is the La Habra Host Lions Club

The La Habra Host Lions Club was organized in 1947. One of its members, Bill Miller, was instrumental in helping the new club form a major annual fundraiser. Bill knew that Southern California had many transplanted mid-westerners and suggested that the Club start an old fashioned corn festival. Initially it was a one day community gathering event that included square dancing, bingo and all the buttered ears of corn that one could eat.

The La Habra Host Lions Club donates the net proceeds from the Corn Festival to various La Habra based non profit organizations as well as regional, national and global Lions International charities. A partial list includes: Lions Clubs International Foundation, Lion’s Eye Foundation, Southern California Lion’s Eye Institute, City of Hope, Teen Recognition, La Habra Boys and Girls Club, Help for Brain Injured Children, The Gary Center and Advance! On to College. It supports La Habra Senior Citizen programs by raising thousands of dollars annually at their Pasta Fest.

The La Habra Host Lions Club is a very active and committed club. It takes the International Motto of “We Serve” to heart. Club membership consists of about 100 professionals, civic leaders and dynamic people who want to contribute their time, talent and treasure to support the important work that Lions do in their community and beyond. There is absolutely no paid staff. The club is strictly volunteer driven. The Club also supports a very active Leos Club, a youth mentor program.

Cleta Harder Developmental School (CHDS)

Established in 1981, the Cleta Harder Developmental School is fully certified by the California Department of Education as a Non Public School (NPS), which is different from a Private School. Staffed with fully credentialed Special Education Teachers and a “highly qualified” support staff, CHDS provides programs of academics, physical development, communication development, socialization, independent living skills and vocational training for children and young adults with moderate to severe disabilities.
Other Programs

TOTAL COMMUNICATION: This program focuses on increasing the opportunities and appropriate outlets of communication for the majority of our facility’s population. “Total Communication” refers to the process of providing the most efficient and appropriate forms of communications for each of our students. Some of these would include various electronic devices, specially designed computers and/or software, or simply the necessary materials to adapt pre-existing materials.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING/INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS: This program is a bridge that helps prepare students for life after school. It incorporates vocational skills training and independent living development for our older (17-22yrs) population, which makes-up more than 30% of our entire student body, who are at or beyond the age of a senior level in high school. For many of our students, there is a significant need to learn independence and various self-help skills. These skills range from the very basic, such as dressing and hygiene, to more involved activities, such as shopping and meal preparation as well as learning vocational skills to potentially enter the workforce, becoming productive members of society.

BEST PRACTICES for POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT: This program reevaluates the approach to immediately managing and redirecting student behaviors, as well as approaches to alleviate the underlying causes of the outbursts through a series of specified steps and practices designed to “build positive relationships with the students, encourage positive behavior and respond appropriately to problem behaviors.” In regards to the “approach,” though state-approved hands-on techniques are sometimes needed to protect an “acting out” student and support staff from harm, CHDS feels it is vital to the student’s physical and emotional well-being, as well as their (the student) overall success, to research, evaluate and employ alternative means of intervention.

The museum features 7 galleries and 14 different hands on exhibits, many of which remain unique to the field today. In addition to these exhibits, an outdoor dinosaur topiary and historic 1942 caboose, the museum features an exhibit which changes 3 times a year. The museum welcomes local, national and international visitors. Children can ride a kid-size carousel, take a walk in T-Rex’s footprints, pet an Arctic fox, pump gas, drive a bus, dress up and perform, and dig for fossils all in one afternoon.
