The goal was to establish a non-profit organization consisting of all full-time members of the Police Department. Past members wanted to bridge the gap between the citizens of La Habra and the Police Department by becoming more involved in community services, events, and charities.
Sonora High School History

Sonora High School was originally built on forty-two acres on the eastern side of La Habra and opened to ninth and tenth graders in 1966, becoming a full, four-year senior high school in 1968. The school garnered a number of architectural design awards at its inception, with its nearly entirely indoor, but very open, classroom arrangement. This design, at the time, was considered the epitome of a learning environment that would meet the needs of students, staff and the community while maximizing opportunities for student learning. Ten wings, a gymnasium/locker room/pool complex, a food services area, a lecture hall / amphitheater arrangement, and the school offices all surround three large indoor “commons” areas, in the middle of which is the library/media center. As times and educational philosophies changed, the school began adding doors to the various classrooms in the wings. Today, nearly all classrooms have doors, with the exception of the 420 Science Wing. Most staff feel that this has enhanced the ability of their students to concentrate on their learning, paving the way for higher achievement.

Nevertheless, the indoor environment overall has been most favorable from the point of view of safety and togetherness. With limited points of entry to the campus, it is much easier to keep track of both students and visitors. Also, the somewhat forced togetherness has led to the distinctive sense of community among the students, staff and parents at the school. This pervasive culture has no doubt been a major factor in the recognition by the state as a California Distinguished School four times, in 1994, 1996, 2000 and 2007.

The Sonora High School Community

Sonora High School is one of seven high schools in the Fullerton Union High School District, located in North Orange County and serving students from the cities of La Habra, Fullerton, and Brea. The area served by Sonora could be described as a suburban community with growing commercial activity, but with limited industry. Members of the community are mostly middle socio-economic professional, managerial, and skilled workers. Sonora is a comprehensive four-year high school with an enrollment of approximately 2000 students. Sonora High School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. From the class of 2006, 30% of the graduating class will be attending four-year colleges and 50% will be attending community colleges. Several unique programs have been implemented at Sonora — the International Baccalaureate Honors Program, the Scope, Sequence and Coordination Science Program, Medical Careers Academy, JROTC and AVID.

During 2008-2009 its staff members, parents and students had meetings to complete the Focus on Learning report that the WASC Visiting Committee reviewed to determine its accreditation. The final step in this process took place October 25-28, 2009, when the Visiting Committee spent time on campus and in the classrooms to confirm the report. The Visiting Committee is comprised of administrators and teachers from other school districts throughout California. Hope University’s students participate in art exhibitions, perform in the hand-bell choir or vocal choir, perform dances and dramas, and learn to play instruments, and more. There are many very talented artists and performers here at Hope University, but opportunities are available to anyone who is interested in or motivated by the arts.

We thank you Paul Kuehn, for your voice, and thank you Doris Walker for your vision.

Hope University Programs and Services

At Hope University, our goal is to provide a well-rounded program that develops all aspects of each individual artistically, academically, behaviorally, and socially. To achieve this goal, we offer the students a wide range of classes including: art, choir, hand-bells, music therapy, dance, drama, computer skills, academics, yoga, and much more. Through these classes, we strive to help each student reach their fullest potential. They gain a greater sense of self-worth by developing their talents and capabilities and using them to give back to the community in a variety of different ways. Through public performances of music, dance, drama, and exhibitions of art, Hope University showcases the remarkable talents of its students and demonstrates their potential to contribute to and assume integrated roles within the community. Hope University students inspire the human spirit and render hope to those whose loved ones may have similar disabilities. In concert with our outstanding course offerings, Hope University’s nurturing environment is clearly the most essential part of the program. We are proud to have gathered a strong team of highly-qualified and dedicated staff that works hard to provide a caring and personalized environment for each student. The direct-care staff is highly educated; most have degrees in the arts, psychology, or a combination of the two. More impressive than their educational background, however, is their incredible drive to provide the best program for the students. They motivate, encourage, and challenge each individual to be successful, and work together as a team to foster each student’s talents and strengths. In addition to classes, performances, and art exhibitions, students are given an opportunity to participate in a number of social and educational activities throughout the year including field trips, on-site guest artist performances and workshops, and seasonal parties.

Our programs include:
Visual Arts
Studio Arts

Studio Arts offer students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of art mediums. They explore drawing and painting, computer art, printmaking, collage, papier maché and more. Artworks that are created in studio may end up going to exhibition, or may be featured on a greeting card or calendar page, as just a few examples. Often, studio artists become the behind the scenes support for performances, designing and creating props and sets.

Hope Handmade

Artists in Hope Handmade learn and practice such skills as knitting and hand stitching and beading, among other things. There is something for every skill level, so just about everyone pitches in to support our greatest source of social enterprise: the making and selling of fine crafts. Products include hand-felted beaded jewelry, knitted and felted handbags, hand stitched and beaded stuffed characters, mosaic mirrors, just to name a few.

Special Projects

We actively pursue professional level visual arts projects for the students of Hope University. One such project just completed is our Integrity House Mural Project. This 15 foot high by 70 foot long painted and mosaic mural is on the outside of the building that houses the Integrity House program for adults with cognitive disabilities, located in Santa Ana, CA.

History of the Hass Avocado

All commercial, fruit-bearing Hass avocado trees have been grown from grafted seedlings propagated from a single tree which was grown from a seed bought by Rudolph Hass in 1926 from A. R. Rideout of Whittier, California. At the time, Rideout was getting seeds from any source he could find, even restaurant food scraps. The subspecies of this seed is not known and may already have been cross-pollinated when Hass bought it.

In 1926, at his 1.5-acre grove at 430 West Road, La Habra Heights, California, Hass planted three seeds he had bought from Rideout, which yielded one strong seedling. After trying and failing at least twice to graft the seedling with branches from Fuerte avocado trees (the leading commercial cultivar at the time), Hass thought of cutting it down but a professional grafter named Caulkins told him the young tree was sound and strong, so he let it be. When the tree began bearing odd, bumpy fruit, his children liked the taste. As the tree’s yields grew bigger, Hass easily sold what his family didn’t eat to co-workers at the post office. The Hass avocado had one of its first commercial successes at the Model Grocery Store on Colorado Street in Pasadena, California, where chefs working for some of the town’s wealthy residents bought the new cultivar’s big, nutty-tasting fruit for $1 each, a very high price at the time (more than US$15.00 of inflation adjusted value by 2007).

Hass patented the tree in 1935 (the first US patent on a tree) and made a contract with Whittier nurseryman Harold Brokaw to grow and sell grafted seedlings propagated from its cuttings with Brokaw getting 75% of the proceeds. Brokaw then specialized in the Hass and often sold out of grafted seedlings since, unlike the Fuerte, Hass yields are year-round and also more plentiful, with bigger fruit, a longer shelf life and richer flavor owing to higher oil content. However, Hass made a profit of less than US$5,000 through the patent because cuttings from single trees sold by Brokaw were then propagated to graft whole orchards.

Rudolph Hass carried on as a postman throughout his life and died of a heart attack at Fallbrook Hospital in Fallbrook, California in 1952, the same year his patent expired and not long after he had established a new 80-acre (320,000 m2) orchard.

By the early 21st century the US avocado industry took in over $1 billion a year from the heavy-bearing, high quality Hass cultivar, which accounted for around 80% of all avocados grown worldwide.
